Leadership: Community and Conservation

The Community & Conservation Leadership curriculum will provide an immersive, field-based educational experience grounded in meaningful work, responsibility, community, and connection to place. Participants will learn by working on real projects alongside practitioners, community partners, and one another, developing practical skills and genuine mastery while learning how their work connects to larger systems and community needs.

This approach represents an intentional evolution of the values Sterling has long upheld, adapted to the needs of a changing region and a changing world. Rather than separating education from work or leadership from service, Sterling brings learning, earning, enterprise, and community contribution together in one connected model. Participants develop competence through experience, take on increasing responsibility, and learn to recognize and bring together the people, knowledge, and resources needed to accomplish meaningful work. In this way, the Institute carries forward Sterling’s essential DNA while creating a clearer, community-responsive model for developing capable people and strengthening the places they serve.
